Description from Nat’s website: “Creative JumpStart is a one-of-a-kind community event to jumpstart your creativity in 2018. The Theme this year is “Now We’re Cooking: Mixed Media Art Recipes”. We’re heading into the kitchen of creativity for this one: the Mixed Media studio! Join our crew of Mixed Media Artists and Crafters as they grab their aprons, favorite tools of the trade, and share with their own original recipes for a mixed media masterpiece.”
Here is a $5 off special code that Nathalie is providing us. The code is cjs5runaway – valid through 12/31/17. I will be leading a bi-monthly gathering, where we have permission to project a couple of the videos on our projector. You will need to sign up and be able to show that you did signup for Creative JumpStart by showing me your email receipt. The cost will be $8 per person for 3 hours.
We will watch 1 or 2 of the videos, depending on their difficulty. I will walk us through the techniques demonstrated on the video. Runaway will provide craft mats, water bins, spray bottles, stamps, ink pads, and scissors. You will bring 1-3 art journals and your art journaling supplies. This is a very special opportunity that Nathalie has offered us to view videos and work together. Let’s get inspired and create some beautiful art together!

Runaway is pleased to bring Nathalie Kalbach, author of Artful Adventures in Mixed Media – Art and Techniques Inspired by Observation & Experience. Although now living in New Jersey, Nathalie is a native of Germany who has taught classes in mixed media art applications around the world. She has more than a decade of teaching experience and has designed products for StencilGirl®, Stampendous®, RubberMoon® and Art Foamies®. We are very happy to bring her to Runaway to teach three of her mixed media classes in December.

Stroll Through the Hood – Home Decor Class Saturday, December 2 @ 9 am to 12:30 pm $75
Let’s create a beautiful little wall hanging for your home, office, or beyond!
We will begin by creating a colorful, patterned background. Then we’ll take it further by adding scenery using stamps, graphite, paints and other supplies. Finally we will add detail and highlights to pull the landscape together.
We will be working on Ampersand® Clayboard which offers a special and exciting surface to create your Mixed Media work on.
Master Art Express – Art Journaling Saturday, December 2 @ 2 pm to 5:30 pm $75
Imagine you could take a trip through Europe and at each stop one of the many masters of European art would materialize and invite you to explore their art to implement into your art journal. Let’s take this imaginary trip together and explore different European artists at each station, taking their artwork as an inspiration for mixed media techniques and colors.
We will discuss why some things work and why some things don’t work and will solve the little “problems” that sometimes occur while creating art. Work with acrylic paints, acrylic inks, different tools and materials and gain a deeper knowledge about the versatility and possibilities of your art materials. Let the travel itself be part of the journey and take the elements of art in to push your own art journaling style just a notch further.
Artvergnugen – Art Journaling Sunday, December 3 @ 10 am to 5:30 pm $130

Runaway is celebrating the sun’s return from its disappearing act during Monday’s eclipse with a “Bring Back the Sun” Clearance and Stockroom Sale from Wednesday, August 23 thru Sunday, August 27.

You won’t know what you’ll find, since we barely know what we have! That stock room has been hiding all kinds of gems and now you have a chance to play! We are cleaning out to make room for lots of new products – including Halloween, fall and holiday.
Come by to see what Asa, Clavell and Jessica are up to while Christy and Emily enjoy their vacation with “Mr. Christy,” Bethany and Nana (the family is headed to Disneyland so Bethany can see Pooh Bear and all the other characters she loves). And you can help them empty the store while you visit!

Deb Hook’s “Darn Cute Cards” class offers us a look at a wonderful set of cards each month — she’s offering her June class twice on Wednesday, June 21 (an afternoon offering at 2 pm and an evening offering at 6 pm). Deb is just one of several wonderful card-making teachers who regularly share their skills at Runaway. We are so happy to have them all!

Multi-Surfaced Journal Exploration — using Dina’s NEW journal!!!
Thursday June 1 @ 11 am — 5 pm $150
The new Media Journal is full of varied, interesting surfaces: burlap, canvas, kraft, and handmade watercolor paper. Come to this class to play and explore all the surfaces. A journal is included in the class price. We will stamp, stencil, paint, cut, print, tip in, tear, and have a great day of journaling, playing, and experimenting.
Working in a Series: Playing with Images and Concepts
Friday June 2 @ 11 am — 5 pm $135
Most great artists take one idea–a color, a concept, an image–and use it many ways in their work. This repetition of ideas and images is artistically valuable. It creates work that has depth and interest, and helps you grow as an artist. Come to this class and we will chose our symbols and ideas, and then we’ll work in a series to create interesting artworks. We will make six expressive and playful small works on canvas boards. The pieces will look great on their own but will be even more powerful together. Be sure to bring your journal to use for mop-up, practice, and note-taking.
Joy of Scribbling and Coloring
Saturday, June 3rd @ 10 am — 1 pm $75
Who doesn’t love to scribble and color! Join Dina as we use new Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks to make backgrounds and also to color images, draw, and make interesting marks. This class is chock full of scribbly, colorful techniques for all your mixed media play!
Expressive Drawing: Techniques for Drawing intuitively and Freely
Saturday June 3 @ 2 — 5 pm $75
Dina’s “Art Journal Play” classes are all about exploring and playing with art journaling and mixed-media techniques. The goal is to learn techniques, experiment, play, and make finished journal pages. We’ll be working in journals, but the techniques apply to all mixed-media projects (canvases, book-making, etc.).
Even if you can’t draw, you are welcome in this class. Because guess what…Dina says she can’t draw, either! In this class we’ll take our skill level, whatever it is, and push it to be more expressive and free. This class will include powerful, scribbled faces, but will also include so much more–animals, flowers, buildings–you name it, you can draw it. We’ll work in our journals in this class so that we have lots of space for practicing and experimenting.
If you are interested in taking all of the classes, your total will come to $435.

Get in the mood for love with these great mixed media pieces that you can wear as jewelry or incorporate into mixed media projects. You’ll complete two pieces in class – a Relics Heart and a Art Mechanicals Heart set with ICE Resin. You’ll learn the fundamentals of working with texture pastes, paints and other mediums to create your stunning Relic Heart. The Art Mechanicals Heart will introduce you to cold enameling techniques and the basics for working with ICE Resin to make your own stunning jewelry pieces.

Take mixed media to a new level with this all day class! First we’ll add layers of color and texture onto our background frames, including working with Sculpture Medium with fabrics. Next you’ll be introduced how easy it is to mould your own embellishments with paper clay to incorporate into your work with your other embellishments. To finish our frames, you’ll discover how easy it is to create your own texture pastes and add inclusions for stunning results.

Sunday 11am to 3pm beLOVED Album $100
Here’s your chance to create a special album for those you love! We’ll begin with a sturdy chipboard album which we will layer with the amazing ‘Beloved’ Collection from Authentique Paper. Create your own embellishments from paper clay using the beautiful moulds from Iron Orchid Designs to incorporate onto your album cover. You’ll color and add texture to the album cover and embellishments using your favorite Finnabair products to make your own masterpiece album for all of your keepsakes! You’ll have time in class to continue working on your album pages if desired so feel free to bring any pictures, images or other embellishments to work on in class.

The real joy of this store is the customers — and Christy and the rest of the Runaway gang have appreciated the kind words so many of you have offered since we opened our doors in June of 2013! Here is just a sample of the recent feedback we’ve received from some of the people who have helped make Runaway Art & Craft Studio the fun place to shop, learn and craft that it has become!
A couple of months ago a Facebook customer offered the following comment: “I had a wonderful experience meeting the owner and some of the staff. The level of professionalism, knowledge and passion are incredible. I highly recommend visiting here for their products and support.” — We appreciate recommendations like that one!
One customer commented last July on Square that “I love you guys. Feels like ‘family’ in your store.” — We work hard for that feeling; and our customers ARE our family!
In June another said “Always great service at Runaway Art and Craft Studio!” — Well, we aren’t perfect. But we do try to do what we can to make our customers happy!
Another June comment was specific to Christy’s Beginning Copic class: “I really enjoyed learning so much about the pens and shading and stuff. Very valuable workshop for me. thanks!”
In May we heard from a Square customer who said “The owner, Christy, and her crew are top notch! Always friendly and helpful!” — It certainly helps to have top-notch customers as well!
Of course, we love the folks who praise the selection, and the classes — but we really treasure the repeated comments about the times that one or the other of the folks here have gone the “extra mile” for a customer. We want that to be our trademark.

Well, the weather outside is indeed frightful — so we aren’t even going to try to open on Sunday, January 8. We closed early today (after 1 reasonably busy hour followed by 2 hours that were . . . . ummm . . . . not so busy. And with Sunday morning’s forecast, we want both the Runaway gang and our customers to stay home and stay safe!
Okay, so maybe the picture isn’t really from this weekend. 🙂
